Tips for English Learners
6/2/2009
Learning a new langauge is hard. I certainly have said crazy things in other languages, but here are a few things I've overheard those learning English.
Potatoes
Most people call them mashed potatoes. While some people also say smashed potatoes, it will strike many people as an odd food item.
By or With?
If you want a child to play quietly, tell them to "go play by yourself", not "go play with yourself". There is quite a big difference. Reminds me of this quote from Better Off Dead when Lane first speaks with the French exchange student:
Monique Junot: He keeps putting his testicles all over me.
Lane Myer: Excuse me?
Monique Junot: You know, like octopus? Testicles?
Lane Myer: Ohhhh. Tentacles. N-T. Big Difference.
Get
Yes, "get" really is a magic word in English. You can get just about anything.
I'm your Venus
The lyrics to the famous song are actually I'm your Venus, not I'm your Penis.
