Forget the PDA, forget the IPOD, I want an Origami!

3/10/2006

What is an Origami? It is a new tablet computer about the size of a small book. But it is not just from one manufacturer, an Origami is a specification or outline which many manufacturers are building for.

Origami is a specification designed by Microsoft. The Origami specification specifies things like general size, maximum weight, minimum battery life, as well as features such as WiFi, USB and so on. Manufacturers however can customize and add more items to their designs. The idea behind the specification is to drive an initiative as well as provide some standardization. While they are computers, they are not only targeted at geeks, but are designed to be portable presentation machines, work machines, movie players, Internet access, movies and more. I predict that we will see Origami become ubiquitous and popular with kids, businessmen, geeks, and even just plain techies. I love my laptop, but for basic work on planes, trains and other travel I need something bigger than my PDA, but smaller than my laptop. For most people I see the Origami being their main device, while I will carry three (Laptop, PDA / smart phone, Origami).  Most people can give up the PDA, but us super travelers need something super accessible no farther away than our belts.

I have played with some Origami machines, and I am sure in the near future you will have a chance too. Until then check out the Origami Project.
