To all my friends in Pakistan
8/27/2006
It appears after my last trip to Pakistan there is still some confusion about why some of my sessions were not presented as planned. I think it must be due to the understanding of the word "crash".
What is a "crash"?
A few hours before I left for the airport to go to Pakistan for Pakistan Developers Conference my main work hard drive crashed. I explained this in some detail, but it seems that the word "crash" does not translate well. At that time I used an external USB drive for my demo virtual machines as my internal drive was not large enough. Then I would move the ones I needed before each trip on to the internal drive (which is also a slower drive). Now as I said, it crashed. By crashed - the data was lost. Poof, gone, destroyed, bye bye, dead, kaput! I still had my primary hard drive and thus the laptop was fine and that is how I was able to present sessions, although we did have to do some last minute substitutions. Even so, the feedback I received was that attendees still enjoyed the sessions, even the ones that were substituted.
When will I post the lost material?
I do not have the material. It was lost in the crash and is unrecoverable. Some of the material I will recreate as needed for future conferences. Some of the material was based on older versions and some of that I used to present at PDC.
Do I like Pakistan?
No, I do not like Pakistan. I love Pakistan! I enjoy every place I travel in MEA, but a few places I have really grown to love for unexplained reasons and Pakistan is one of these places.
When will I return to Pakistan?
I do not have definite dates yet, but I am planning an academic tour in Pakistan and possibly it could occur later this year in November or December.
