NVIDIA versus Intel - Night and Day

8/13/2009

I currently prefer Intel over AMD for desktop processing, but mostly because of the greater choice in motherboards. Regarding chipsets though, I have had nothing but repeated nightmares with poor performing Intel chipsets, and extremely buggy drivers from Intel.

My ASUS P5Q-EM died yesterday. I happened to have a ASUS P5N7A-VM quickly available and I swapped it in. All other components remained the same. Just a day before the P5Q-EM died I had installed Windows 7 RTM on it. I had to reinstall it on the P5N7A-VM. The difference is huge, and I am not speaking about graphics. I have a quad core CPU and a RAID 0 setup. With the Intel chipset it was quick, but just felt that it should be faster. The P5N7A-VM with an NVIDIA chipset is several factors faster with a fresh Windows 7 install. I first noticed the installation happened much faster, but now several hours later I notice everything is factors faster.
