Has 64 bit on the desktop finally come of age?
10/9/2009
I've tried to go to 64 bit several times. I've even run 64 bit for several months at a time. But drivers and other incompatibilities always forced me back to 32 bit.
In fact, despite Microsoft's backing 64 bit, for a long time they were they worst offender for 64 bit incompatibility. Fortunately, their actions have finally caught up to their words. It's not just an issue of drivers, but often of applications as well. Most 32 bit applications run on 64 bit Windows, but not always.
XP x64 was challenging, with many drivers not available. Fortnately ASUS has very good driver support for their boards, but support for extra devices was an issue. I also tried Vista x64. Drivers and applications remained an issue. However more users ran Vista x64 than did the little known XP x64. It seems though finally more vendors are paying attention, and Windows 7 includes many more drivers than even Vista. I've now installed Windows 7 x64, and without any trouble all of my applications are running fine, and I've easily found drivers for all my hardware.
Time will tell, but so far the signs are extremely good. I hope finally, we can play in 64 bit waters without feeling like 3rd class citizens.
