Future Origamis
4/11/2006
A few weeks ago I blogged about the Origami and several users wrote to tell me why they were not excited about them. I agree, but what is available are just the first releases. Consider this....
When I looked deeper at the specifications of the Origamis that are available now, they were a bit below what I expected. The two biggest items are the price and battery life. Current models have a 4 hour rated battery life and cost around $1,300 or more. I expect that in the future Origamis will appear with a 10-12 hoir battery life and a price under $500. Intel Duo processors are already allowing recent laptops to move from 3.5 hours to 6.5. When these are incorporated and prices come down, I expect the Origami will find its suite spot. How long will this take? My best guess is about a year. Until then the Origamis are nice and help to fill some niche areas, but I do not think we will see them competing with IPod's, PSP's or other.
There are a lot more Origamis on the way, I have seen many more protoypes than what are publically available now.
Been there done that?
Another point that was made was that the Origami is not really new, there have been small tablets before. This is true, there have been small tablets before. However Origami is a "unified" effort with a baseline. There were MP3 players before the IPod, portable computers before laptops, and handheld radios before mobile phones. Origami creates a "platform" around which hardware and software vendors can participate.
Others agree
After I wrote this I came across this blog post: Disaster: UMPC To Retail For $2,000. The author is spot on - but I have hopes that this issue will be resolved.
