Thinking outside the box

5/6/2008

Too often we think only of making incremental steps based on existing precepts. But we constantly need to be aware of new ways to do things. This is true in other disciplines as well, and here is an amazing video of a Russian jet which does just that.

Actually, many Russian jet designs think outside the box. Ever seen a firefighting jet? The Russians have one. But the point of this post is about jet engines that the thrust can be aimed. Take a look at this video and be ready to be amazed.

The F-35 there has VTOL, but AFAIK cant do fine tune thrust vectoring to control normal flight. As the video you linked says, the Harriers have had that for years. The F-22 has limited thrust vectoring which is used in flight, but what is really unique about the Russian video is the full degree and unidrectional ability of their thrust vectoring abilities.
