Microsoft to publish formats of .doc, .xls, etc
6/30/2008
From a mention in a press release called "Microsoft Takes Additional Steps in Implementing Interoperability Principles" there are a few gems.
"posting nearly 5,000 pages of new technical documentation for the Microsoft Office binary file formats for Word, Excel and PowerPoint (.doc, .xls, .xlsb and .ppt);"
I am really glad that Microsoft is publishing more and more, but especially for the binary Office file formats for pre Office 2007. The new XML formats are much easier to work with and I will continue to focus on them, but there are still cases where the binary formats are a requirement. In the past most users were left to rely on reverse engineering and this led to a lot of problems.
