Silly Symantec

7/30/2008

Ever heard the saying "Hi we are from the Government and we are here to help?". Key words to be scared of. The first thing I do on any computer that someone brings to be that they say is slow or having problem is to remove all Norton and Symantec software. So when I saw this blog post at GottaBeMobile, I fell out of my chair.

Here is a screenshot, and the original post if you are interested. I love one of the Technorati tags they gave it as well.

Ok,

Symantec, Norton and our Finnish "pride and joy" F-Secure are recourse hogs. But are there any tests which Virus and/or Firewall software would be light fast and user friendly? Easy to say (what I do all the time :D) that this software is not good, but ould do more good to find good alternative...

Avira AntiVir Personal 8 works well for me under Vista Ultimate. Here is a list of resource usage:

I've had good luck with AVG. I hear Avira and Kaspersky are quite good as well. I remove any thing Norton/Symantec instantly from any system I work on.

I'm using Computer Associates - but thats because I connect to the MS network and its required to run that. I'm quite happy with it, but I think its expensive if you dont have access to it otherwise.

I also know of a center that is using something called ClamWin - I havent dug into it, but I havent noticed any problems with it.

Clamwin works very well for me. The only 'gripe' is that they are still developing the automatic scanner. With a little discipline I check all foreign sources of data with it before I open them (especially flash disks).

Seeing as it doesn't scan automatically, it is really fast :).
